Engine Autopsy | Oil Starvation
If you're unfortunate enough to have an engine failure it's important to determine what caused the problem. If you rebuild the engine without figuring out what happened to it your new engine may suffer the same fate! In this new series we're calling "Engine Autopsy" we'll be looking at various engines that come to our shop hurt and try to determine what caused the damage.

What Harmonic Balancers Do and Why You Need One!
Just like the pump on a 4l60 e 700r4
you know the block is strong when he says its strong 10 different times in 10 different ways lol
How can we prevent this. does it sound specific?
Tune and fuel it right for the most part
@@motoiq you mentioned detonation has a sound, how do you know when you hear it, it is detonation?
Did IAG release that block?
Good to see Martin and some B13 footage!
Great videos. But we want some love for the F Series too . We need to tune them!!
I just wanna say thank you for your knowledge 🙏
I've found god😅❤
Hi A composite or MLS based material gaskets will isolate heat. But if you use a copper gasket its soft and will crush and seal very well under higher boost and heating conditions but it does somtimes require additional cooling to the cylinder head with pvc cooler air recirculation/catch can filter, stronger rad fans, and lowering engine bay temps by wrapping exhaust and installing cold air intake
I have never gotten a copper gasket to long term seal the water jacket. I have tried coating them with everything known to man and they always eventually weep. They seal compression fine, just not the water after many heat cycles. I consider them to be drag race or short term use only.
@@motoiq it should be preventable? why does it weep, corrosion? use better coolant, heat expansion and contraction, use better thermostat even 2 temp sensors with electronic valve, and electric pump to run after shut down, maybe a stainless fire ring around the area like the kind that is a c shape and folds around the edge in a groove, if your heat cycles are overheating the engine that's why it would fail and only if the coolant is overheating from heat soaking, there is coolant you can get that is waterless and inert, maybe retorquing the head would help after heat cycles, copper compression fittings work good and are used for many industrial applications, they have a good yield strength to tensile strength usage without degradation to compression over time so my guess would be oxidization
That has nothing to do with copper head gaskets.
@@motoiq why does it Weep? you said they weep?
If I knew mine wouldn't! Technology makes gaskets that won't blow out and seal better nowdays.
Hello! I’m looking to get an estimate on a 4age engine rebuild. I tried to fill out the forms on your website but kept getting errors. What is the best way to contact your shop for a work order estimate? Thanks!
Checked, nothing is wrong with the site or links
@@motoiq Got it! Thank you thank you
😁
Great video!
Looks like he’s about to burst out laughing the whole time haha
Cambelt needs tensioning more
Sounds a bit missy
the frs in the back round😍🥵
Want to buy it?
Quick question did you go with the Killer B Motorsport 321 Stainless Holy Header/Up-Pipe or with the MAX VE ?
It's the same thing, just one is bundled with an up pipe and the other isnt.
this is not the first time i hear of vr30 oil starvation issues
I'm currently building a Nissan VK56VD for boost; the engine was burning oil like crazy and likely had a starvation issue at one point. What are your thoughts on Accusumps and the like? Presents itself like cheap insurance for an 'expensive to me' rebuild....
If you are doing track days or drifting they are a help.
You guys are doing the lord's work with these videos.
He's this crazy combo of the easy going friendly guy but he has been going so long in high performance and seen so much stuff. He's a treasure. So much learned wisdom. When he sneezes he forgets more than I've ever known
Find it funny when Cali people complain about 91 lol try getting 87 or 89 here in Canada
Can this technique impliment into MR20DE?
It should
Which header type would be best on a 4.6L 3V Ford with an Edelbrock 2300 Supercharger?
Long tube
That engine is exactly like mine, brand new top of the line everything and after 2000 miles spun a rod bearing from low oil.
Remember when Buddy Hackett went to Tokyo? Your mom does.
Still have my 240 i bought in 03. Not in the best condition but i just cant let it go LoL. I went with the s15 t28 turbo, tomei manifold(which is cracked now) 550cc injectors, tomei poncams and a RS enthalpy tune. Car has been sitting for a number of years but i am in the process of getting back on the road. Miss driving it
Going to a jiffylube is like russian roulette, the random employee in there might just have the bare minimum on how to change oil... maybe. The last time i went there they didn't even tighten my new oil filter on: I'm taking about just hand tight. After they did the job i went under and was able to turn my newly installed filter they did with just one finger. Would have been running with a massive trail of oil all the way home. Something as simple as an oil change that's so cheap to do, really should just be done by the owners themselves or a shop you trust and have experience with. Avoid the jiffylube highschooler getting paid crap that could barely do their homework to touch your car.
What about black smoke when foot out the gas pedal
I never heard of the back pressure nonsense until the kids with small import engines.
Failures make for "better" content
Just makes you realise how all of the other videos on YT about suspension setups are garbage.
I had an oil change place straight up forget to put oil in my work car. Ruined the engine
❤❤❤
I really, really hope this channel keeps putting out such excellent, informative and intently educational videos such as they have been. This one, in particular I great for it's completeness, thorough explanation of observations and (more than anything) very approachable and presented in digestible manner even for those relatively unlearned in automotive mechanics and engineering. Wonderful stuff and greatly appreciated.
Would you recommend WPC for an LSD that'll be used for drifting?
Amazing work old technique but very effective
Is that a ej25 vs a fa20? Or is that the ej20 vs fa20? Because the ej20 has thicker cylinder walls like the FA20
The parts were bits of all of them
Sad part is that it’s a manual…
What an absolute legend. I would absoloutley love to have a conversation with him one day and shake his hand.
11000 rpm avec une course de 85.5mm, comme ce fait t'il que les piston arrive a resté accroché au bielle 🤓??
Thanks for sharing the VR30 is an egine i been interested for some sort of swap or just a Q60 coupe maybe . good to know the open deck and the direct injection are things to deal with
I'd wager the solenoid on the variable pump failed and the low volume of lubrication ruined the bearings until enough particle debris jammed the pump vanes.
The variable part was jammed, the vanes were ok.
what distance counts as short hop driving?
Less than 10 minutes
I had my oil cooler lines fail at me when I was at about 275k on LQ4, I was on a interstate mountain pass with no shoulder due to construction for awhile so when I shut it off it locked up. I was convinced my engine my was toast to the point I even panic bought a different engine that wasn't a 6.0 because 6.0 ls aren't cheaply found. But then I decided you know what I'm gonna take a look at it and by putting marvel mystery oil in it for a few days and it then started spinning so I dropped the pan and took out all the mains, none spun all immaculate, the damage crank was toast and rods were toast. But the block survived and I'm really impressed. It appeared that while I did lose oil almost everywhere the mains didn't lose all oil. Even the crank journals on the mains were still shiny. 4/5 were even in tolerance. So I am now rebuilding it. Sure its probably gonna cost me a little bit more to do the build than buy another engine but I think the extra money is worth it since I'm building out a 408 stroker so way more power than buying another stock 6.0. Then its a rebuilt engine with a forged bottom end which I'm sure will last longer than a random LQ4 with unknown miles.
Stack those pistons in a Hyd Press... THEN watch the cast piston break the forged one.
Not really
I have that engine in my Frontier truck...I don't think it's ever seen 5,000 rpm.
